Twins 4, Yankees 1: Trevor Plouffe, Ryan Doumit and Pedro Florimon homered while Samuel Deduno matched a season high with seven strong innings as visiting Minnesota downed New York for the first time in six tries this season.
Deduno (5-4) yielded a run on six hits and three walks to snap the Twins’ six-game slide while Joe Mauer went 2-for-4 to improve his batting average to .415 over his last 16 road games. Casey Fien pitched a scoreless eighth and closer Glen Perkins worked around an infield single in the ninth for his 21st save.
Phil Hughes (4-9) tied a career high with 10 strikeouts, but took his fifth loss in six starts after allowing three home runs for the first time since July 27, 2012. The right-hander was charged with four runs on five hits and a walk in 7 1/3 innings.
Robinson Cano staked Hughes to a lead in the first inning when his line drive ricocheted off Deduno’s left heel and sailed into shallow center for a single to score Ichiro Suzuki from second base. Plouffe evened it an inning later as he turned on a 2-2 fastball and deposited it into the Twins’ bullpen.
The game remained at 1-1 until the seventh when Doumit – who entered Saturday 6-for-9 in his career against Hughes – continued his domination with a solo shot. Florimon capitalized on a bunt single by Aaron Hicks to lead off the eighth and lifted a deep fly ball off the facing of the second deck in right to give the Twins a three-run cushion.
GAME NOTEBOOK: Twins manager Ron Gardenhire was ejected in the eighth by home plate umpire Vic Carapazza for arguing a batter’s interference call on a grounder by Clete Thomas. Florimon followed with his homer six pitches later. … Hughes’ double-digit strikeout effort was his first since April 21, 2010 and the second of his career. However, he allowed two or more homers for the 24th time in his career – the most of any Yankees pitcher since 2007. … Minnesota is 8-31 in New York since 2002 and won for only the 24th time in its last 96 games (including playoffs) against the Yankees.
