Twins 5, Mariners 4: Ryan Doumit blistered a two-run triple with one out in the bottom of the ninth to cap a three-run uprising as host Minnesota beat Seattle for its fifth victory in six games.
Seattle closer Tom Wilhelmsen (0-1) walked the bases loaded in the ninth and allowed Josh Willingham’s sacrifice fly before Doumit smacked his drive into the right-center field gap. Eduardo Escobar easily scored from second with the tying run and Joe Mauer scored from first as Brendan Ryan’s relay throw sailed over the head of catcher Kelly Shoppach.
Jason Bay hit two homers for the Mariners, including a two-out, go-ahead shot off Kevin Correia in the seventh for a 3-2 lead. Bay and Kyle Seager hit back-to-back homers in the first inning, while Minnesota scored a second-inning run on Aaron Harang’s throwing error and tied the game in sixth on an RBI single by Brian Dozier.
After Bay’s tiebreaking homer in the seventh, the Mariners added another run later in the inning when Kendrys Morales and Raul Ibanez both laced singles off the right-field fence off reliever Brian Duensing, with Ibanez’s hit driving in Seager.
Caleb Thielbar (1-0) pitched a scoreless top of the ninth for his first major-league victory.
GAME NOTEBOOK: The two-homer game was Bay’s first since July 5, 2011, when he was with the New York Mets. … Harang allowed two runs (one earned) and four hits in six innings, and Correia gave up four runs and seven hits in 6 2/3 innings. … Mariners OF Michael Morse (quadriceps) sat out his fourth consecutive game and 1B Justin Smoak (oblique) missed his seventh straight start.
