Marlins 4, Nationals 2 (1st): Giancarlo Stanton and Christian Yelich homered and Tom Koehler pitched six strong innings as visiting Miami eliminated Washington from the National League East race.
Yelich finished with two hits and two runs scored while Donovan Solano added a pair of hits and a sacrifice fly for the Marlins. Koehler (4-10) allowed two runs on three hits and Steve Cishek struck out two in a perfect ninth for his 32nd save.
Ryan Zimmerman hit a two-run homer - his 26th of the season and 11th this month - for the Nationals, who fell 5 1/2 games behind Cincinnati for the second National League wild-card spot. Washington’s loss gave Atlanta the NL East title.
Stanton connected for his 24th homer of the season in the first inning, a two-run shot to right field off Dan Haren (9-14) that opened the scoring. Yelich took Haren deep with two outs in the fourth to make it 3-0.
Zimmerman’s sixth-inning blast to center off Koehler brought the Nationals within a run, but pinch hitter Juan Pierre singled in the seventh and later scored on Solano’s sacrifice fly to put the Marlins up 4-2. Haren allowed three runs on eight hits in six innings.
GAME NOTEBOOK: The Nationals have won eight of their last 11 games, but their magic number for being eliminated from the wild-card race has dwindled to two. ... Washington honored manager Davey Johnson before the game. The 70-year-old Johnson is retiring at season’s end. … Solano started at second base for Miami, and his brother, Jhonatan Solano, started at catcher for the Nationals.
