Padres 4, Pirates 2: Carlos Quentin had three RBIs for the second consecutive day and Andrew Werner won his major-league debut as host San Diego completed a three-game sweep of Pittsburgh.

Werner (1-0) allowed two runs and four hits in six-plus innings. The left-hander walked four and struck out two as the Padres won for the 18th time in the last 21 meetings with the Pirates.

San Diego won its fourth straight contest overall while slumping Pittsburgh fell to 9-15 over its last 24 games as it seeks its first playoff appearance since 1992.

The Padres took advantage of wildness by Pirates starter James McDonald (11-6) to strike for three first-inning runs. McDonald walked the first three batters and Quentin followed by slamming a two-run double off the left-center field fence. A sacrifice fly by Mark Kotsay plated the third run.

Pittsburgh got on the board in the fourth on a run-scoring single to right by Pedro Alvarez.

San Diego’s Will Venable doubled off the center-field fence in the fifth and scored later in the inning on Quentin’s sharply hit single to right. Venable went 7-for-12 and scored six runs in the series.

Pittsburgh’s Gaby Sanchez drilled a leadoff homer over the center-field fence in the seventh. Werner followed by walking Alvarez before being removed and Brad Brach entered and retired three straight hitters. Luke Gregerson worked a perfect eighth and rookie Tommy Layne pitched a flawless ninth for his first career save.

Werner is the 14th different starting pitcher for the Padres this season – most in the majors.

McDonald allowed four runs and five hits in five innings. He walked five and struck out two.
