Rays 10, Angels 8: Carlos Pena hit a two-run pinch-hit homer in the
eighth inning as visiting Tampa Bay erased an 8-0 deficit to stun
reeling Los Angeles.
Ben Zobrist had a three-run double and Evan Longoria hit a two-run homer
in Tampa Bay's seven-run fifth inning as the Rays won for the 11th time
in the last 12 meetings with the Angels and for the 12th time in their
last 14 contests at Angel Stadium.
Tampa Bay also increased its lead atop the American League wild-card
standings to 1 1/2 games and moved to within five of the New York
Yankees in the American League East.
Mike Trout had three hits, a homer and three RBIs while Albert Pujols
hit a two-run blast for the Angels, who fell 3 1/2 games behind
Baltimore for the final wild-card spot and dropped to 6-12 in August.
Pena, who is batting .193 this season, drove a 2-2 pitch from Kevin
Jepsen (2-2) into the right field seats after Jeff Keppinger led off
with a single.
Jake McGee (4-2) pitched a perfect seventh inning to earn the victory.
Fernando Rodney earned his major league-leading 38th save in 40 chances after striking out Erick Aybar and getting Maicer Izturis to ground out with runners on second and third in the ninth.
Trout led off with his 23rd homer and RBI singles by Kendrys Morales and Mark Trumbo put the Angels ahead 3-0 in the first.
Pujols' 27th homer of the season followed Trout's RBI single and Torii
Hunter's run-scoring double to give Los Angeles a 7-0 lead in the second.
Trout added a run-scoring infield hit in the third.
Los Angeles starter C.J. Wilson extended his winless streak to 10
starts. Following four scoreless innings, he was pulled after yielding
Longoria's two-run homer with two outs in the fifth. Wilson allowed five
of his six hits and two of his three walks in the inning.
Zobrist's double made it 8-5 after Sam Fuld's RBI single and Desmond Jennings' bases-loaded walk started the uprising.
Jose Lobaton's sacrifice fly in the sixth tied it 8-8.
Tampa Bay's Alex Cobb had won his last three starts and yielded one run
in each outing. He gave up eight runs and 12 hits in 2 2/3 innings
Saturday.
