Adam Jones snapped a string of 13 consecutive Orioles hitters being retired by ripping a leadoff double off Alfredo Aceves (2-10) in the 12th inning. Thome, who entered the at-bat going 0-for-5 with a pair of strikeouts, plated Jones after depositing a cut-fastball into the corner in right field for a one-hop double. Endy Chavez and rookie Manny Machado added insurance runs with RBI singles to cap the three-run uprising.
Mark Reynolds led off the fourth inning with his 22nd homer and Jones did the same in the seventh with his 31st. Rookie Ryan Flaherty ripped a two-run triple for the Orioles, who posted their 22nd win in 32 games. They remained one game behind American League East-leading New York after the Yankees rallied for a 10-9 win in 14 innings over Oakland on Saturday.
The late offense allowed Tommy Hunter (6-8) to pick up the win after tossing one scoreless frame. Jim Johnson secured his 47th save in 50 opportunities by retiring the side in the 12th inning.
Danny Valencia belted a two-run homer after being activated from the disabled list on Friday. Scott Podsednik launched a game-tying RBI double off the Green Monster in the eighth inning for the Red Sox, who have dropped four in a row overall and seven of eight at home.
GAME NOTEBOOK: Playing in place of the injured Robert Andino, Flaherty greeted incoming reliever Rich Hill by depositing a fastball into the triangle in right-center field. Chris Davis and Machado raced around the bases to give Baltimore a 5-3 advantage. Andino sat of Saturday's tilt after he was hit in the left ear by a pitch during the ninth inning of Friday's game. ... Baltimore has won nine of its last 10 in Boston. ... Bruins enforcer Shawn Thornton threw out the ceremonial first pitch.
