Georgetown 84, No. 10 Virginia Commonwealth 80: D’Vauntes Smith-Rivera scored 26 points as the Hoyas held on to win the consolation game at the Puerto Rico Tip-Off.
Markel Starks scored 20 of his 23 points in the second half for Georgetown (3-2). Joshua Smith added 17 points for the Hoyas, who shot 56.1 percent from the field but committed 26 turnovers.
Briante Weber scored 22 points to lead VCU (4-2). Treveon Graham scored all 17 of his points in the second half for the Rams, who dropped two of three in the tournament, and Melvin Johnson finished with 16 points off the bench.
VCU went just over five minutes before scoring, allowing Georgetown to jump out to an 8-0 lead. However, the Hoyas converted just one field goal in a seven-minute stretch later in the half, allowing the Rams to move ahead 26-20.
VCU maintained a one-point lead at the half and was still within a point when it went without a field goal for the nearly seven minutes, allowing Georgetown to hold on for the win. Rob Brandenberg added 11 points for the Rams.
