Purdue 74, Northwestern 43: Terone Johnson hit a career-high four 3-pointers and scored 22 points as the host Boilermakers avenged a loss to the Wildcats earlier this month and snapped a three-game losing streak.
D.J. Byrd led three other players in double figures with 13 points for Purdue (13-14, 6-8 Big Ten), which held its sixth opponent this season to fewer than 50 points. Freshmen Rapheal Davis and Ronnie Johnson also chipped in with 10 points apiece.
Tre Demps scored nine points to lead Northwestern (13-15, 4-11), which shot 28.6 percent – the third straight game it has failed to reach 30 percent.
The Boilermakers never trailed and bottled up a struggling Wildcats offense from the start, limiting Northwestern to one field goal over the first 5:51 of the game to race out to a 14-3 advantage. Purdue allowed consecutive field goals, but rolled off 14 unanswered points over the next 5:51 to build a 29-7 cushion.
The Wildcats struggled to mount any kind of offense in the second half and failed to show much urgency in getting back on defense against an angry Purdue team that had seven full days to recover from its 83-55 loss at Indiana. The Boilermakers outscored Northwestern in the paint 36-16 for the game, much of which came courtesy of nine second-half layups.
GAME NOTEBOOK: Northwestern held a 14-point lead at the break in its 75-60 victory over Purdue in Evanston on Feb. 2, but the Boilermakers raced out to a 15-point halftime advantage Sunday. … Reggie Hearn, who exploded for a career-high 26 points in the first meeting, was limited to eight in this contest. … The Boilermakers won the rebounding battle 41-21 – the third time in the last four games the Wildcats have been outrebounded by 20 or more.
