No. 19 Gonzaga 84, West Virginia 50: Gary Bell Jr. scored 15 points and Guy Landry Edi added 14 as the No. 19 Bulldogs dismantled the visiting Mountaineers.
Kevin Pangos scored 13 points, Elias Harris added 11 and Gonzaga (2-0) jumped out to an early 17-2 lead and built a 27-point halftime bulge while spoiling West Virginia’s season debut.
The Mountaineers went 1-for-9 from the field and committed six turnovers over the first eight-plus minutes. The Bulldogs also started cold and missed 11 of their first 12 shots before becoming hot in the midst of a 16-0 run that elevated them to the 15-point lead.
The Zags led 45-18 at halftime with Bell scoring 13 points and hitting three of Gonzaga’s six first-half pointers. West Virginia cut its deficit to 50-32 five-plus minutes into the second half and the Bulldogs quickly recovered with seven straight points to push the lead back to 25.
The Mountaineers were led by Aaric Murray’s 14 points while shooting a paltry 27.8 percent from the field – including 3-of-26 from 3-point range – and committing 18 turnovers. Gonzaga went 26-for-50 from the field after its early struggles to finish at 52.0 percent.
GAME NOTEBOOK: Gonzaga improved to 104-7 at the McCarthey Athletic Center since it opened in 2004. … West Virginia committed 14 turnovers in the first half, when it shot 21.7 percent from the field. … The Bulldogs were 9-of-16 from 3-point range.
