Myles Mack scored 12 of his 16 points in the second half as Rutgers dominated after the break en route to a 77-53 victory over the New Jersey Institute of Technology on Thursday.
Gilvydas Biruta scored 15 points and Eli Carter and Austin Johnson added 10 apiece for the Scarlet Knights (7-5), who have put together their first three-game winning streak of the season.
The Highlanders hung in with their in-state rivals through the first 20 minutes, going into the break even at 32-32. But Rutgers, which has now won all five meetings between the schools since NJIT jumped to Division I, was able to impose its will in the second half.
Mack led the charge, knocking down a pair of 3-pointers as the Scarlet Knights shot 50 percent in the second half and outscored the Highlanders, 45-21.
Mack started the first nine games but was moved to the bench by coach Mike Rice the last time out in an effort to boost the production of the reserves. The freshman guard responded with a career-high 22 points in that win over Stony Brook and was off the bench again against the Highlanders.
Chris Flores and Lamar Kearse scored 12 points each for the Highlanders.
