CLEVELAND, Ohio – Darius Johnson-Odom scored 17 points and hit a tie-breaking 3-pointer from the top of the key with 25 seconds remaining to lead No. 11 seed Marquette to a 66-62 win over No. 3 seed Syracuse on Sunday night in a third round NCAA East Regional tournament game between Big East Conference foes at Quicken Loans Arena.

Marquette (22-14) advances to its first Sweet 16 since 2003 when Dwyane Wade led the Golden Eagles to the Final Four. The Golden Eagles will meet second-seeded North Carolina in the semifinals of the East Region on Friday in Newark, N.J.

Syracuse (27-8), which was looking for its third consecutive trip to the round of 16, shot 55 percent from the field, but 18 turnovers hurt the Orange, who were outscored at the free-throw line 19-5.

Jae Crowder added 16 points for Marquette and hit a key 3-pointer with 2:25 remaining to tie the game at 59-59, setting the stage for Johnson-Odom’s pressure shot.

Freshman Dion Waiters scored 15 of his career-high 18 points in the second half to lead Syracuse, which failed to avenge a 76-70 loss at Marquette in late January. Kris Joseph added 12 points and nine rebounds for the Orange.
