North Carolina freshman Harrison Barnes scored a career-high 40 points to lead the Tar Heels to a 92-87 overtime victory over Clemson in an ACC tournament semifinal Saturday in Greensboro, N.C.
Barnes, the ACC Freshman of the Year, accounted for 14 of his points in overtime as the Tar Heels (26-6) advanced to Sunday's final against Duke.
Barnes was 12 of 17 from the field, including 6 of 8 from 3-point range, to register the highest single-game scoring output ever for a freshman in the ACC tournament. He added eight rebounds and an assist to fuel the Tar Heels' rally from a 14-point first-half deficit.
The Tigers (21-11) suffered their third loss to North Carolina this year. They went without a field goal for the final 4:39 of regulation and the first 2:55 of the overtime. Their inability to make shots down the stretch allowed the Tar Heels to run off 13 consecutive points in erasing a 73-66 Clemson lead with 4:39 left in regulation.
Senior guard Demontez Stitt finished with a career-high 25 points for the Tigers, who are expected to be in the NCAA tournament field.
