Jeremy Hazell scored 31 points on 9-of-14 shooting as Seton Hall upset visiting No. 15 St. John’s, 84-70, on Thursday.
Fuquan Edwin added 19 points for the Pirates (12-17, 6-11 Big East), who shot 64 percent (27 of 42) from the floor, including 12 of 18 from beyond the arc. Seton Hall snapped a three-game slide and beat its second ranked opponent of the season.
Dwight Hardy scored 23 points for the Red Storm (19-10, 11-6), who had their six-game winning streak snapped and now need a win over South Florida on Saturday and a Syracuse loss to secure a top-4 seed and a double-bye in the Big East Tournament.
The Pirates came out strong and grabbed a 34-30 lead at the half thanks to 7 of 11 shooting from beyond the arc.
St. John’s finally managed to take the lead, 53-49, when Justin Brownlee completed a four-point play with 12:20 left, but Hazell was fouled beyond the arc and hit all three free throws and then drained another 3-pointer to give Seton Hall the edge again.
The Red Storm never managed to retake the lead and the frustration boiled over late, with head coach Steve Lavin getting called for a pair of technical fouls and getting ejected and then Justin Burrell also getting ejected for a flagrant foul.
