Tony Mitchell and JaMychal Green scored 15 points apiece and Alabama held archrival Auburn scoreless for more than four minutes late in the game en route to a 68-58 Southeastern Conference victory in Auburn, Ala.
Alabama (12-7, 4-1 SEC) has won eight of its last 10 and has sole possession of first place in the SEC West, while Auburn (7-12, 0-5) remains the league’s only winless team.
Alabama, coming off an upset win over No. 12 Kentucky Tuesday, held a 51-49 lead with 5:07 remaining and held Auburn scoreless until the final minute. The Crimson Tide’s last field goal came on a layup by Andrew Steele that upped the lead to 53-49, but Alabama made 15 of 18 from the free-throw line in the last 2:14 to keep the Tigers at bay.
Trevor Releford and Senario Hillman each added 10 points for Alabama, which had lost four of its previous five meetings against its in-state rival.
Auburn has now lost eight games in its new state-of-the-art Auburn Arena.
Earnest Ross came off the bench to lead Auburn with 20 points and a career-high 13 rebounds while Kenny Gabriel chipped in 11.
