Erving Walker led four players in double figures with 16 points and No. 16 Florida bounced back from a shocking loss with a 67-48 victory over American on Sunday.
Alex Tyus had 14 points and Chandler Parsons added 13 for the Gators (6-2), who have underachieved early on despite returning all five starters from last year’s NCAA Tournament team. They were blown out by No. 4 Ohio State in the second game of the season and then suffered an embarrassing 57-54 loss to Central Florida on Wednesday.
Florida bounced back from that stunning defeat by leading wire-to-wire against American (5-3), which has lost three straight after getting off to its best start in 25 years.
The Gators led by double digits for most of half. The Eagles cut the lead to eight at 60-52 with 8:12 left, but Florida responded with a 17-4 run that ended any hopes of an upset. Vernon Macklin’s 3-point play with 3:16 remaining gave the Gators a 65-46 advantage and Walker added a pair of free throws to make it a 21-point game with 2:09 left.
Troy Brewer had 17 points for the Eagles, who never got closer than eight points in the second half.
