Jake Burger delivered a walk-off RBI single in the 12th inning, and the Chicago White Sox overcame an injury to star Tim Anderson, to beat the visiting Chicago Cubs 5-4 on Sunday.

After each team scored twice in the 10th and once in the 11th, the Cubs failed to plate a run in the top of the 12th. The White Sox took advantage as Burger drove the ball into left field off Robert

Gsellman (0-2), scoring Danny Mendick (two hits) to avoid a third straight defeat and split this two-game series to finish 3-1 against their crosstown rival in 2022.

However, Anderson, the White Sox's most consistent offensive presence batting .356, had to be helped off the field after he suffered a strained right groin while fielding a grounder up the middle and throwing out P.J. Higgins in the fifth inning. Anderson will be further evaluated on Monday.

Each team got strong outings from their starters on Sunday. The Cubs' Marcus Stroman, who retired 13 straight hitters spanning parts of the first through fifth innings, recorded 90 pitches, allowed three hits, walking two and striking out two over seven. He barely outdueled the White Sox's Dylan Cease, who yielded an unearned run, two hits, four walks and struck out five, also over seven innings, on a season-high 108 pitches.

The Cubs broke through with the game's first run in the top of the seventh against Cease, when P.J. Higgins cracked a two-out short-hopper to third that Burger couldn't handle, and allowed Rafael Ortega to score from second.

The White Sox loaded the bags with one out in the seventh, but Stroman fanned Reese McGuire and got Josh Harrison on a liner to second baseman Andrelton Simmons. They finally got even in the ninth when Gavin Sheets (two hits), who doubled against the Cubs' infield shift with one out in the ninth, scored from third on David Robertson's wild pitch.

The Cubs, who went 1-for-12 with runners in scoring position, have dropped three of four after winning three straight.

Matt Foster (1-0) earned the win for the White Sox.
