Five Padres pitchers retired the last 20 hitters they faced Thursday night as the host San Diego Padres rallied from a four-run first-inning deficit to defeat the Washington Nationals 5-4 at Petco Park.

Franmil Reyes capped a three-run fifth inning against Patrick Corbin (5-4) with a line drive for a tie-breaking sacrifice fly.

Left-handed starter Joey Lucchesi, who gave up four runs in the first on a two-run single by Howie Kendrick and a two-run homer by Brian Dozier, retired the final eight Nationals he faced after Dozier's two-out double in the third to improve to 5-3 on the season.

Relievers Matt Wisler (who struck out the side in the sixth), Trey Wingenter (two strikeouts in the seventh), Craig Stammen and Kirby Yates all followed with perfect innings -- with Yates picking his 23rd save in as many chances. Yates capped the game with a strikeout of Matt Adams.

The Nationals' four-run first started with a one-out double by Victor Robles and a two-out walk to Juan Soto. Both runners scored -- Soto racing home from first -- on Kendrick's single to center. Dozier followed with his ninth homer.

The Padres started their climb back in the second. Franmil Reyes drew a walk from Corbin leading off the inning and Hunter Renfroe followed with a two-run, 442-foot homer to left. It was Renfroe's 18th homer of the season and fourth in his last six games.

The Padres took the lead in the fifth with the help of an error and a wild pitch, with two of the three runs charged against Corbin in the inning unearned.

Manuel Margot opened the inning with a single. Rookie shortstop Fernando Tatis Jr., who returned to the leadoff spot Thursday night after missing 34 games with a left hamstring strain, followed with a single ahead of a walk to Wil Myers to load the bases.

Two runs scored on the next play. Manny Machado hit a grounder to the third-base side of shortstop Trea Turner, who fielded the ball and went to third trying to get a force on Tatis. But Anthony Rendon couldn't handle the throw, with Tatis following Margot home to tie the score and Myers advancing to third -- from where he scored on Reyes' sacrifice fly.

Lucchesi allowed four runs on four hits and three walks with five strikeouts over five innings. Corbin allowed five runs (three earned) on five hits and five walks with six strikeouts in five innings.

The loss was only the Nationals' third in the last 12 games.
