Marlins 3, Cardinals 0: Donovan Solano hit a rare home run and Jarred Cosart outdueled Adam Wainwright as host Miami beat St. Louis for the second straight night.
Cosart (10-8) allowed only three hits - all singles - over seven scoreless innings to earn his first win with his new team, and Mike Dunn recorded the final out for his first save of the season. Christian Yelich and Casey McGehee each had two hits for Miami, which pulled within 3 1/2 games of St. Louis for the second wild card.
Wainwright (14-7) was denied in his bid to become the majors' first 15-game winner, allowing three runs and seven hits over seven innings. Mark Ellis had two of St. Louis' four hits as the Cardinals dropped 1 1/2 games behind wild-card leader Pittsburgh and three back of National League Central leader Milwaukee.
The Marlins snapped a scoreless tie in the fourth, when McGehee led off the inning with a double, took third on Garrett Jones' groundout and scored on Jarrod Saltalamacchia's single. The Cardinals elected to pitch to the No. 8 hitter Solano later in the inning and paid the price, as he pulled his second homer of the season just inside the left-field foul pole for a 3-0 lead.
Cosart retired 13 of the first 14 batters he faced and wasn't in much trouble until a a hit and an error gave St. Louis two on with one out in the sixth, but the right-hander worked out of the jam. The Cardinals put two on in the ninth against Bryan Morris before Dunn came on and struck out pinch hitter Matt Adams to close it out.
