The Dallas Stars took another step toward clinching a playoff spot with a 2-1 road win over the Calgary Flames on Wednesday night, but they may have paid a heavy price with goalie Ben Bishop leaving the game due to injury.
Late in the second period, Bishop came up lame after sliding across the crease while tracking the play and immediately departed due to a lower-body injury. It's the second time this month Bishop has been hurt during a game. After getting injured on March 14, he missed two games.
Dallas (40-31-6, 86 points), which holds the first Western Conference wild-card spot, received 20 saves from Bishop and another 15 stops from Anton Khudobin. Stars forward Justin Dowling sustained an upper-body injury and didn't play in the third period.
Dallas has won six straight meetings with Calgary and six consecutive road games overall.
The Western Conference-leading Flames (47-23-7, 101 points), who are one of the league's highest-scoring teams, have dropped two straight, both on home ice, and combined for just one goal in those defeats.
While Calgary's offensive talents appear to have nearly disappeared, the Flames' defensive play while short-handed was just as ugly, as Dallas netted both goals on the power play.
Alex Radulov opened the scoring with 2:34 remaining in the first period on an outstanding individual effort -- or porous defense, depending on your vantage point. Radulov gained the puck in his own zone, raced up ice and then split through a trio of Flames skaters before burying his 25th goal of the season.
Rookie defenseman Miro Heiskanen added an insurance goal at 12:24 of the third period when he pounced on a loose puck during a chaotic scramble in the Calgary zone and potted his 11th of the season.
TJ Brodie broke the shutout quest when he scored with 92 seconds remaining in regulation, but the hosts couldn't find the equalizer with a late push.
Goalie David Rittich made 21 saves for Calgary.
