Senators 5, Canadiens 1: Captain Daniel Alfredsson and rookie Mika Zibanejad scored after Montreal's Ryan White was whistled for a double minor in the second period as the host Senators won their fifth game of the season.

Defenseman Chris Phillips also tallied as Ottawa collected three goals in less than four minutes. Jim O’Brien scored in the first period and Chris Neil banked in a wrap-around in the third for the Senators. Playing in his 300th game, Craig Anderson made 31 saves in the victory.

Tomas Plekanec opened the scoring on the power play for the Canadiens, who lost on the road for the first time this season. Peter Budaj stopped 22 shots in his first start of the season, but Montreal was undone after a roughing penalty by White, who then argued the call.

Trailing by three entering the third period, Montreal outshot Ottawa 13-5, but Anderson made some key saves to preserve the victory.

The first of four games this season between the Northeast Division rivals began with two fights in the initial six minutes and 38 total penalty minutes in the first period.

GAME NOTEBOOK: Senators C Kyle Turris, who is under 50 percent in faceoffs on the season, won 13 of 19 draws and will need to be strong in the faceoff circle while Jason Spezza is out with a back injury. … Montreal D P.K. Subban, who signed a two-year, $5.75 million contract earlier in the week, joined the team in Ottawa but was a healthy scratch. … Ottawa D Sergei Gonchar, who scored the game-winner against Washington on Tuesday, missed the game with a sore foot.
