Canadiens 4, Panthers 1: Defenseman Andrei Markov scored twice on the power play and rookie Alex Galchenyuk recorded his first NHL goal as Montreal shut the door on visiting Florida.
Tomas Plekanec also scored and Carey Price made 27 saves for the Canadiens, who recovered from a lackluster 2-1 loss to Toronto in their home opener.
Tomas Kopecky had a power-play goal for Florida, which lost on the road for the second straight night after dropping a 4-0 decision to Ottawa.
Markov scored from the high slot during a two-man advantage in the first period and unloaded a one-timer from the blue line that beat Scott Clemmensen on a power play midway through the second. Max Pacioretty assisted on both goals and defenseman Raphael Diaz also set up a pair of tallies.
Playing in his second NHL game, Galchenyuk tipped in a shot from Brandon Prust while screening Clemmensen, who stopped 29 shots for the Panthers.
GAME NOTEBOOK: Panthers RW Alex Kovalev, who played parts of five seasons with the Canadiens, finished with one shot and was a minus-1 against his former team. … Canadiens C Ryan White was ejected early in the third period after taking exception to a hit on D Josh Georges by Tomas Fleischmann. White, who grabbed an unsuspecting Fleischmann and threw numerous punches with his gloves already off, was called for instigating and fighting while also receiving a 10-minute and a game misconduct. Fleischmann was given a minor for boarding. … Kopecky left the ice late in the game after Plekanec's stick slipped underneath his visor and clipped him near the eyes.
