Justin Robinson scored 27 points and Monmouth beat Southern California 83-73 in the third-place game of the AdvoCare Invitational in Orlando, Fla., on Sunday.
It was the fourth time this season Robinson, a junior guard, scored at least 25 points and he was helped by freshman guard Micah Seaborn and senior forward Deon Jones, who had 20 and 14 points, respectively. This was the second meeting between the two teams in just the season's third weekend. USC beat the Hawks 101-90 in a home game on Nov. 16.
Junior guard Julian Jacobs led the Trojans (5-2) with 19 points and freshman forward Bennie Boatright provided 16 points and nine rebounds. Jacobs, however, went 0-for-5 on 3-pointers and USC struggled as a team from beyond the 3-point arc, shooting just 3 of 22 (13.6 percent).
Monmouth (4-2) hit 12 of its 30 3-pointers, including a 5-for-8 effort from Robinson on treys. The Hawks also went 19-for-22 (86.4 percent) from the foul line.
Both teams pulled off upsets in the first round of the eight-team tournament. Monmouth topped No. 17 Notre Dame to advance to the semifinals, while USC beat No. 20 Wichita State on Thanksgiving.
