No. 22 SMU 67, Tulsa 62: Markus Kennedy scored 16 points on 6-of-8 shooting and Cannen Cunningham had 12 points and 12 rebounds as the host Mustangs defeated the Golden Hurricane to win the American Athletic Conference regular-season title and the No. 1 seed for the upcoming conference tournament.
Nic Moore added 14 points by hitting all seven free-throw attempts as SMU (24-6, 15-3) won a conference crown for the first time since 1993 when it was part of the now-disbanded Southwest Conference. Sterling Brown added eight points and eight rebounds as the Mustangs possessed a 39-30 edge on the boards.
James Woodard put on a show by recording career highs of 30 points and 10 3-point baskets for Tulsa (21-9, 14-4). Shaquille Harrison added 10 points, nine rebounds and nine assists for the Golden Hurricane, who will be the second seeds for the conference tournament.
Kennedy scored nine straight SMU points and Yanick Moreira followed with a basket to give the Mustangs a 46-41 lead with 8:13 remaining before Woodard drained his seventh 3-pointer to get Tulsa back within two. SMU boosted the lead to seven and the Golden Hurricane moved back within two on Woodard’s eighth 3-pointer and he knocked down two more 3-pointers in the final 22 seconds to make it a three-point margin before Kennedy sealed it with two free throws with eight seconds left.
Woodard made five 3-pointers in the first half and his final one gave Tulsa a five-point lead before the Mustangs scored the final six points of the half for a 29-28 lead. The Golden Hurricane used an 8-0 burst early in the second half for a five-point edge and the lead reached 39-33 on D’Andre Wright’s 3-pointer with 14:05 to play.
GAME NOTEBOOK: Tulsa was 12-of-27 from 3-point range. … Kennedy also had seven rebounds and three blocked shots. … Woodard moved into 18th place on Tulsa’s all-time scoring list with 1,359 points, breaking a tie with Jarius Glenn (1,329 from 2001-05).
