Arizona State 83, Detroit 68: Freshman point guard Jahii Carson had 22 points and a career-high 10 rebounds for his first career double-double and the host Sun Devils used a fast start to win the NIT tournament opening-round game.

Carrick Felix added 21 points and seven rebounds, Jordan Bachynski scored 16 points and Jonathan Gilling finished with 10 for third-seeded Arizona State (22-12), which plays second-seeded Baylor in Friday's second round.

Jason Calliste scored 19 points, Ray McCallum Jr. had 16 and Doug Anderson finished with 12 for sixth-seeded Detroit (20-13), which shot 2-for-20 from 3-point range.

Detroit missed its first 10 first-goal attempts before getting a basket with 10:17 left in the first half to cut the deficit to 24-8. After starting 1-for-14, the Titans finished the opening half 6-for-27 and trailed 46-27.

The Sun Devils had a slow start to the second half, making one basket in the first six minutes, allowing Detroit to cut the deficit to nine. A 10-2 run by the Sun Devils pushed the lead back to 17 and finally put to rest the comeback.

GAME NOTEBOOK: Detroit came in ranked sixth in the nation in turnover margin (plus-5.2). The Sun Devils finished with 24 turnovers and the Titans had 11. … Detroit entered the game ranked eighth in the nation in scoring (78.1). … The Titans shot 26-for-27 from the free-throw line and Arizona State was 24-for-28.
