Villanova 98, St. John's 86 (OT): Darrun Hilliard scored six of his 14 points in overtime as the host Wildcats pulled away in the extra session to win their Big East opener against the Red Storm.
Hilliard's foul with four seconds left in regulation sent D'Angelo Harrison to the line where he connected on the game-tying free throws. But Hilliard had two free throws and a layup in the first 2:08 of overtime to put Villanova ahead for good.
The Wildcats (10-4) outscored the Red Storm 15-3 in the extra session, with St. John's getting its first points on a free throw with 42 seconds to play. Ryan Arcidiacono scored a team-high 32 points, connecting on 7 of 13 shots from 3-point range. JayVaughn Pinkston added 28 for the Wildcats.
Harrison finished with a game-high 36 points for the Red Storm (8-5) but had just two in overtime. Phil Greene IV and Amir Garrett each had 15 for St. John's.
GAME NOTEBOOK: St. John's connected on 50 percent of its attempts from 3-point range (10-of-20). … The Wildcats outrebounded the Red Storm 41-31, led by James Bell's 11. … St. John's stays on the road for its next contest, a Saturday game against No. 15 Cincinnati. Villanova plays its first conference road game on Jan. 9 when the Wildcats visit South Florida.
