TULSA, Okla. – Jordan Hamilton and Tristan Thompson each recorded double-doubles, and No. 4 seed Texas held off Oakland’s late charge for an 85-81 victory in the second round of the NCAA West Regional on Friday at the Bank of Oklahoma Center.
Hamilton scored 19 points with 11 rebounds, and Thompson added 17 points, 10 rebounds and seven blocked shots for the Longhorns (28-7). J’Covan Brown scored 21 points off the bench for Texas, which advances to face fifth seed Arizona in the third round Sunday.
Reggie Hamilton led the No. 13 seed Golden Grizzlies (25-10) with 25 points.
Texas used a 12-2 surge to build a 63-46 advantage on Jai Lucas’ 3-pointer with 12:39 to go. Down 78-63 with 4:59 left, Oakland rallied with a 12-2 run of its own, Larry Wright’s 3-pointer with 1:25 remaining bringing the Golden Grizzlies within 80-75.
The Longhorns sealed it from the free-throw line, hitting 5 of 6 in the final 59 seconds.
Oakland, which entered the tournament second in the nation in scoring (85.6 points) and second in field-goal percentage (49.4 percent), shot 44.6 percent from the field. The Golden Grizzles finished 7 of 29 from 3-point range.
