Senior Calvin Haynes’s four free throws in the final nine seconds keyed Oregon State to a thrilling 76-75 victory over Arizona on Sunday night in Pac-10 action.
Haynes finished with a team-high 18 points for the Beavers, who also got a stellar effort from sophomore Jared Cunningham. Cunningham, one of the nation’s leaders in steals, had a towering tip-in dunk and key three-point play during a two-minute stretch late in the second half to help keep the Beavers ahead.
Cunningham finished with 17 points and four steals, but saw the end of his consecutive free throw streak end against the Wildcats. He tied Vince Fritz’s (1966-67 season) school record with 34 straight free throws without a miss.
Lamont Jones and Derrick Williams led the Wildcats (12-3, 1-1) with 20 and 16 points respectively
.
It was the third straight victory for the Beavers (7-6, 2-0) against the Wildcats. Before that winning streak, the Wildcats had won eight straight.
Oregon State joins Washington as the only 2-0 teams after one week of conference play. The teams will meet Saturday at Washington.
