Ramone Moore scored 14 points and Rahlir Jefferson added 10 points and 10 rebounds as No. 22 Temple topped Seton Hall 62-56 on Friday in the opener for both teams.
Juan Fernandez had 12 points, five assists and seven rebounds for the Owls (1-0), who have begun the march to their fourth straight NCAA Tournament appearance.
The preseason favorite to win the Atlantic 10, Temple led by as many as 16 points late in the second half but had to hold off a late charge from the Pirates (0-1).
A tip-in from Jefferson gave the Owls a 60-44 lead with 4:16 left, but Seton Hall went on a 12-0 tear to pull within 60-56 with 20 seconds left. However, Fernandez made two free throws to seal the win.
Jeremy Hazell scored 20 points for the Pirates, who shot just 26 percent from the field (19-of-73).
