Pirates 5, Yankees 3 (Game 2): Josh Harrison delivered a go-ahead solo home run in the seventh inning as visiting Pittsburgh earned a doubleheader split with New York.
Starling Marte added a two-run homer and scored twice for the Pirates, who dropped a 4-3 decision in the opener of the twinbill. Gerrit Cole (4-3) allowed three runs and seven hits while striking out eight in six innings to earn the win.
Alfredo Aceves (0-2) surrendered Harrison’s home run as the Yankees had their four-game winning streak come to an end. Yangervis Solarte homered among two hits and Brendan Ryan drove in a run with a bunt single for New York.
The Pirates grabbed an early lead when Chris Stewart plated Marte with a single to right field in the second inning, but the Yankees took advantage of some poor defense to plate two in the bottom of the frame. John Ryan Murphy came up with a runner on first and sent a routine grounder into right that eluded Travis Snider, allowing a run to score and Murphy to go all the way to third before coming home on Ryan’s bunt.
Marte put Pittsburgh back on top with a two-run homer in the sixth, but Solarte’s blast in the bottom of the frame tied it before Harrison launched a shot to left in the seventh. Harrison made a diving catch in left in the eighth and the Pirates pushed across a run in the ninth before former Yankee Mark Melancon closed it out for his sixth save.
GAME NOTEBOOK: Pittsburgh RF Jose Tabata left the game in the second inning with right hamstring tightness and was replaced by Snider. … New York starter Vidal Nuno allowed three runs - two earned - on six hits and a walk in six innings. … The Yankees get Monday off before opening up a nine-game road trip at the Chicago Cubs on Tuesday. The Pirates return home to host the Baltimore Orioles on Tuesday.
