Rays 8, Blue Jays 0: Drew Smyly tossed a two-hitter for his first career complete game and Evan Longoria went 3-for-4 with a homer and three RBIs as visiting Tampa Bay posted its American League-leading 17th shutout.
Kevin Kiermaier matched Longoria with three hits - including an RBI double - as the Rays blanked their second straight foe following a four-game skid. Wil Myers launched a solo homer while Desmond Jennings and Ben Zobrist each delivered a run-scoring single in the rout.
After getting blitzed for five runs in two-thirds of an inning in his previous outing, rookie Marcus Stroman (7-5) was torched for six runs - five earned - on 10 hits and three walks in five frames. Toronto has dropped seven of nine to fall 4 1/2 games behind Seattle for the second wild card in the American League but is two ahead of Tampa Bay in the standings.
Backed by an offensive explosion, Smyly (8-10) retired the final 19 batters he faced to complete his 105-pitch masterpiece. The 25-year-old struck out four and did not walk a batter in improving to 2-1 in four starts since being acquired from Detroit.
Longoria led off the second by depositing a first-pitch fastball from Stroman over the wall in left field for his 16th homer. Tampa Bay tacked on one run in both the fourth and fifth innings before Longoria plated a pair with a double into the left-field corner to highlight a four-run sixth.
GAME NOTEBOOK: Longoria's solo homer accounted for his 75th career RBI versus the Blue Jays. ... Tampa Bay OF-DH Matt Joyce went 1-for-3 to improve to 12-for-27 with six doubles and seven RBIs against Toronto this season. ... The Rays are just one shutout behind St. Louis (18) for the major-league lead.
