Cardinals 6, Yankees 0: Lance Lynn tossed his first career shutout and Matt Holliday went 3-for-3 with a home run as host St. Louis knocked off New York.
Matt Adams went 3-for-4 and drove in a run while Allen Craig was 2-for-4 with a homer and two RBIs as the Cardinals won for the 10th time in 13 games. The Yankees were blanked for only the second time this season while having their three-game winning streak snapped.
Lynn (6-2) allowed five hits and three walks with two strikeouts as he won for just the second time in seven outings. The 126-pitch effort resulted in Lynn’s first complete game in 75 major-league starts.
St. Louis jumped ahead by scoring four third-inning runs, one on a ground-rule double by Adams off David Phelps (1-2) that one-hopped the fence in right-center and the other three on two New York errors. First baseman Kelly Johnson was charged with an error when he was off the base for shortstop Derek Jeter’s throw on Craig’s bouncer as Holliday scored from third, and second baseman Brian Roberts followed by booting Jhonny Peralta’s grounder to allow two more runs to cross the plate.
Craig hit an opposite-field blast to right in the fifth to make it 5-0. Holliday led off the seventh with a shot into the left-center field seats for his first homer since April 28.
GAME NOTEBOOK: Yankees 1B Mark Teixeira sat out for the second straight game due to soreness in his surgically repaired right wrist. … Cardinals ace Adam Wainwright (no runs in 17 innings) shared National League Player of the Week honors with Los Angeles Dodgers pitcher Josh Beckett, who tossed a no-hitter on Sunday. … Phelps allowed five runs (three earned) and eight hits in six innings.
