Rays 5, Yankees 1: Wil Myers belted an inside-the-park three-run homer and had four RBIs to help Erik Bedard end a 15-start winless drought for visiting Tampa Bay in the rubber game of the three-game series.
Bedard (1-1) allowed one run on six hits in a season-high six innings to earn his first victory as a starter since June 26 against St. Louis. Evan Longoria doubled home a run, Desmond Jennings had three hits and Logan Forsythe added two hits and scored twice as the Rays finished 5-5 on their 10-game road trip with their fourth win in five contests.
Left-hander CC Sabathia (3-4) was pounded for five runs on 10 hits in only 3 2/3 innings for New York, which lost for the fourth time in five games. Yangervis Solarte drove in the only run with a sacrifice fly and Brett Gardner had a pair of hits for the Yankees.
The Rays came out swinging against Sabathia and put up a run in the first when Longoria doubled home Forsythe, who led off the game with a double. After Solarte tied it with a sacrifice fly in the second, Myers hammered a drive off the top of the fence in center field in the third and circled the bases when Jacoby Ellsbury's foot got caught in the padding for a three-run blast and a 4-1 edge.
Myers, the first player to hit in his first 13 games at Yankee Stadium, continued to torment New York with a two-out, run-scoring double in the fourth that plated Forsythe and chased Sabathia in favor of recent callup Alfredo Aceves, who pitched 5 1/3 scoreless innings and retired the last 12 batters he faced.
GAME NOTEBOOK: Myers, who boosted his season numbers against New York to 12-for-32 with four homers and 14 RBIs in seven games, had the 11th inside-the-park homer in team history and first since Sept. 25, 2011. ... Sabathia failed to get through four innings for the first time since Oct. 2, 2009 - also against the Rays - and saw his ERA balloon to 5.75. ... The Rays designated RHP Heath Bell, a former All-Star closer, for assignment Sunday and recalled RHP Nathan Karns from Triple-A Durham. ... Denver Broncos QB Peyton Manning attended the game and was a guest of Yankees captain Derek Jeter during batting practice. New York Giants QB Eli Manning also was in attendance.
