Indians 8, Orioles 7 (13): Carlos Santana hit a tiebreaking two-run double in the top of the 13th as Cleveland rallied twice to down host Baltimore in the opener of a four-game set.
After Preston Guilmet retired Justin Sellers to open the 13th, Troy Patton (0-1) immediately served up consecutive singles to Michael Brantley and Lonnie Chisenhall before Nick Swisher drew a walk to load the bases. Yan Gomes flew out to right, but Santana – a .148 hitter entering his sixth and final at-bat – ripped a two-strike grounder right down the left-field line to plate the winning runs.
Josh Outman (4-0) worked a pair of scoreless innings to get the decision while Scott Atchison allowed a one-out homer to Nick Markakis before retiring the last two batters he faced to secure his second career save. Michael Bourn went 3-for-6 for the second straight game and Santana was one of four Indians with two hits, while Ryan Flaherty hit his first homer of the season – a three-run shot – for the Orioles.
Ryan Raburn homered to open the second and Cleveland starter Justin Masterson was staked to a three-run lead in the next inning as Brantley tripled in Bourn and scored on a wild pitch. Masterson, who made his first career start on three days rest, began to fade in the sixth when Steve Clevenger and J.J. Hardy recorded consecutive run-scoring singles.
Flaherty completed the Indians’ five-run inning moments later when he drove a low 1-2 fastball from Masterson over the fence in right, but Cleveland knotted it at 5-5 in the seventh on an RBI groundout by David Murphy and run-scoring single from Mike Aviles. Nelson Cruz put Baltimore back in front with a sacrifice fly in the bottom half, but the lead proved to be short-lived when Chisenhall went deep for the second straight game in the eighth.
GAME NOTEBOOK: Orioles 3B Manny Machado left the game in the top of the 12th with right groin stiffness. … Baltimore LHP Wei-Yin Chen was tagged for a season-high five runs on eight hits over 6 2/3 innings, allowing more than three runs for the first time in his last seven outings. … Brantley’s triple extended his hitting streak to eight games – a stretch during which he is batting .412 – and he has recorded at least one hit in 19 of his last 20 contests.
