Dodgers 6, Diamondbacks 0: Adrian Gonzalez homered and drove in five runs and Hyun-Jin Ryu tossed seven shutout innings as visiting Los Angeles blanked Arizona in the opener of the three-game series.
Ryu (2-1) bounced back from the shortest outing of his career by allowing two hits and one walk while striking out eight after giving up eight runs (six earned) in two innings against the Giants last Friday. Gonzalez went 3-for-5 while extending his hitting streak to seven games, and Hanley Ramirez added three hits and scored three runs.
The Dodgers took the lead in the first when Ramirez singled with two outs against Brandon McCarthy (0-2) and Gonzalez followed by depositing his third home run into the right-field seats. McCarthy lost for the first time in four starts against the Dodgers, allowing six runs on 10 hits over seven frames.
Los Angeles, which won for the third time in its last four games, extended its lead in the third when Gonzalez came to the plate with runners at second and third and delivered a two-run single. McCarthy settled in after the third inning and retired 10 in a row, but the Diamondbacks never threatened against Ryu, who retired his final 10 batters before Jamey Wright came on to pitch the final two frames.
The Dodgers added two insurance runs in the eighth when Yasiel Puig and Ramirez opened with back-to-back doubles before Gonzalez forced McCarthy’s exit with a run-scoring single to left field. Puig had one hit in four at-bats and scored two runs after missing the last three games with a sprained left thumb.
GAME NOTEBOOK: Gonzalez leads all active players with 25 homers and 82 RBIs against Arizona in his career. … Arizona 1B Paul Goldschmidt went 0-for-4 and had his streak of reaching base safely come to an end at 31 games. … Diamondbacks SS Chris Owings went 0-for-3 with two strikeouts and is hitless in his last 13 at-bats.
