Mets 3, Cubs 2: Matt Harvey pitched 7 1/3 strong innings and drove in the go-ahead run with an RBI single in the seventh as visiting New York took the series opener from Chicago.
David Wright and Daniel Murphy each delivered a solo home run and Bobby Parnell worked a perfect ninth for his fifth save for the Mets, who have won back-to-back games for the first time since May 1 and 3. Harvey (5-0) allowed two runs in the first inning but shut the Cubs down the rest of the way, surrendering a total of five hits while striking out six.
Starlin Castro recorded two hits and Alfonso Soriano drove in a run for Chicago. Edwin Jackson (1-6) went 6 2/3 innings and was charged with three runs and seven hits in his second quality start of the season.
Rick Ankiel doubled to right in the seventh before Harvey came up with two outs and ended Jackson’s day by sneaking an RBI single through the left side. Wright had put New York up with a solo blast to deep left in the first and Murphy knotted it at 2 in the fourth when his opposite-field shot just made it into the basket above the ivy.
The Cubs took the lead in the first when Soriano sent a grounder to deep short with runners on second and third and was credited with an RBI single, with the throw getting by Mets first baseman Ike Davis to allow the second run to cross. Chicago had a chance to tie the game in the eighth but right fielder Marlon Byrd unleashed a perfect throw to nail Darwin Barney at the plate.
GAME NOTEBOOK: Davis snapped an 0-for-24 skid with a single up the middle in the sixth. … Harvey’s RBI was the second of the season by a New York pitcher. Jon Niese had the first. … Chicago RHP Matt Garza (strained lat) pitched six scoreless innings in a rehab start for Triple-A Iowa on Thursday and declared himself ready to return to the majors. He will throw a side session Saturday, after which the Cubs will decide the next step.
