Yankees 4, Red Sox 3: Ichiro Suzuki scored on a wild pitch with two outs in the bottom of the ninth inning as New York finally shut down Boston to avoid a four-game sweep.
With one out, Suzuki singled off Brandon Workman (5-3) and stole second. After Suzuki advanced to third on pinch hitter Vernon Wells' flyout to right, Workman's first pitch to Alfonso Soriano sailed high off catcher Jarrod Saltalamacchia's glove and to the backstop, allowing Suzuki to score easily.
The Red Sox tied it 3-3 when Will Middlebrooks led off the ninth with an opposite-field home run to right off Mariano Rivera (5-2). The Yankees closer was trying for his first two-inning save in the regular season since 2006, but instead was saddled with his seventh blown save of the season - his most since 2001.
Hiroki Kuroda allowed two runs and five hits in six innings, and Robinson Cano's two-run double in the fifth gave New York a 3-1 lead. The Yankees, who allowed 34 runs in the first three contests of the series, remained 2 1/2 games behind Tampa Bay for the final wild-card spot in the American League.
Mike Carp and Saltalamacchia drove in runs while David Ortiz hit a pair of doubles and scored twice for the Red Sox, who had their five-game winning streak snapped as their lead over the Rays the AL East was reduced to 7 1/2 games. Jon Lester yielded three runs and 10 hits in eight innings for his seventh straight quality start.
GAME NOTEBOOK: New York SS Derek Jeter re-injured his surgically-repaired left ankle Saturday and is out indefinitely. Jeter, ninth on the career hits list with 3,316, has played only 17 games this season and is hitting .190. ... Boston 2B Dustin Pedroia played his 1,000th career game, becoming the 29th player in Red Sox history to do so. ... Boston's Mike Napoli, who went 9-for-17 with three home runs and nine RBIs in his previous four games, did not start and struck out as a pinch hitter in the ninth inning.
