Rays 7, Yankees 3: David Price outdueled CC Sabathia as visiting Tampa Bay avoided a three-game sweep in New York.
Price (8-3) labored through his five-inning stint but still had enough to beat Sabathia (7-3) in a showdown between two of the top left-handers in the American League. Price limited the Yankees to a run on three hits, walking four and striking out eight in a 109-pitch effort.
B.J. Upton and Jose Lobaton each had two hits and an RBI while Drew Sutton added a two-run double for the Rays, who scored just once in the first two games of the series.
Sabathia was charged with five runs (three earned) on seven hits over seven innings, striking out a season-high 12 hitters while walking just one.
Russell Martin homered in defeat for the Yankees, a solo blast in the ninth with the game well out of reach.
With the game tied 1-1 after two, the Rays went ahead for good with two runs in the third. Elliot Johnson reached base on an Alex Rodriguez throwing error and came around to score on a Ben Zobrist single up the middle. Zobrist advanced to third on a Desmond Jennings double and scored on an Upton sacrifice fly.
Sutton extended the lead in the fourth with a one-out double off the left-field wall that plated Lobaton and Matt Joyce.
The Yankees looked to cut into the deficit in the fifth, loading the bases with one out on a Stewart single and walks to Derek Jeter and Mark Teixeira. But Price struck out Rodriguez on a 3-2 curveball and got Robinson Cano to ground out to second on his 38th pitch of the inning.
GAME NOTEBOOK: Rays OF Hideki Matsui was not in the lineup against his former team. Matsui is 0-for-12 lifetime against Sabathia. ... Yankees OF Brett Gardner will play in a minor-league rehab game Friday with the club's Low-A affiliate in Charleston. Tampa Bay opens an all-Florida interleague series with the Miami Marlins on Friday, while the Yankees host the Mets in the latest edition of the Subway Series.
