Oakland scored five quick runs against American League ERA leader Clay Buchholz and Trevor Cahill pitched seven shutout innings as the Athletics posted a 5-0 victory over the visiting Boston Red Sox on Friday night.
Kurt Suzuki had a two-run double in Oakland’s three-run first inning and Daric Barton had a two-run single in the second that pushed Buchholz (15-7) to the showers with none out in the second.
Meanwhile, Cahill (16-6) stymied Boston hitters, giving up three hits. He struck out four and walked two.
Craig Breslow pitched the eighth and Henry Rodriguez worked the ninth to complete Oakland’s 14th shutout of the season.
Buchholz gave up five runs and five hits and walked four in his one-plus innings of work.
Oakland leadoff hitter Coco Crisp went 3-for-3 with a walk, three stolen bases and a run scored.
Athletics designated hitter Jack Cust also reached base four times on a double and three walks.
