Villanova 105, St. John's 68: Daniel Ochefu scored 21 points and grabbed nine rebounds as the host Wildcats moved a step closer to securing a No. 1 seed in the NCAA Tournament, rolling to their 12th straight win in the regular-season finale for both teams.
JayVaughn Pinkston had 18 points and six rebounds and Dylan Ennis added 17 points for Villanova (29-2, 16-2 Big East), which had already secured the top seed in the Big East Tournament. Darrun Hilliard II added 14 points and Josh Hart scored 13 for the Wildcats, who had just three turnovers and notched the most regular-season wins in their program's history
Rysheed Jordan led St. John's (21-10, 10-8) with 21 points and eight assists but the Red Storm had their four-game winning streak snapped. Phil Greene IV added 16 points and D'Angelo Harrison had 15, but St. John's got just eight points off its bench.
St. John's hit its first five shots of the game and quickly built an 11-point lead, but Villanova got 14 points from Hilliard and 11 off the bench from Hart to take a 50-46 lead into intermission. The Wildcats blew the game open early in the second half as Ryan Arcidiacono and Ennis hit back-to-back 3-pointers, extending their lead to 69-58.
Ochefu scored seven straight points for Villanova later in the second half as the Wildcats built a 78-62 cushion with 9:35 left. The Wildcats emptied their bench in the final minutes and snapped the century mark for the first time in three seasons on a 3-pointer by Kris Jenkins with 3:42 left and finished the game on a 43-10 run over the last 13-plus minutes.
GAME NOTEBOOK: St. John's played without Chris Obekpa (ankle) and Jamal Branch (groin), but both are expected to be ready for the Big East Tournament. ... Villanova got 28 points off the bench. ... Phil Booth had eight assists for Villanova.
