Bulls 98, Cavaliers 87: D.J. Augustin scored 27 points for the second straight game and Taj Gibson matched his career high with 26 as visiting Chicago outlasted Cleveland for its ninth victory in 11 games.
Augustin was 5-of-8 from 3-point range and Mike Dunleavy went 4-of-5 from beyond the arc en route to 22 points while Joakim Noah recorded nine points and 18 rebounds for the Bulls. Jimmy Butler added 10 points for Chicago, which is 7-2 since the trade of leading scorer Luol Deng to the Cavaliers.
Kyrie Irving led the way with 26 points, matching a season-high with five 3-pointers, for Cleveland. Dion Waiters had 15 points off the bench, Deng chipped in with 11 on 2-of-11 shooting against his former team and Anderson Varejao added 10 points and 11 rebounds for the Cavaliers.
Gibson scored the first six points and 12 in all in the third quarter as Chicago pushed its lead to as much as 11 and took a 71-62 edge into the final 12 minutes. The Cavaliers trimmed the deficit to three with a little over four minutes left before Augustin capped a 7-0 run with a 3-pointer and the Bulls were on their way.
Augustin, starting in place of injured guard Kirk Hinrich (hamstring), registered eight points and three assists in the first quarter as Chicago built a 23-17 lead. The Bulls led by as much as 10 in the second period but Irving made five 3-pointers in the final six minutes as the Cavaliers edged in front 44-43 at intermission.
GAME NOTEBOOK: Chicago F Carlos Boozer, who now leads the team in scoring (14.9), missed the game due to a left calf strain and is considered day-to-day. … The Bulls have beaten Cleveland 14 of the last 16 meetings, including three of four this season. … The Cavaliers assigned F/G Sergey Karasev and G Carrick Felix to the Canton Charge of the NBA Development League on Wednesday.
