Warriors 87, Suns 85: Carl Landry scored 17 points off the bench and came through down the stretch as visiting Golden State overcame a poor shooting performance and held off Phoenix.

Klay Thompson scored 16 points and Brandon Rush added 14 for the Warriors, who shot 38.4 percent and had only one starter (Thompson) reach double figures in scoring.

Goran Dragic collected 17 points, six rebounds and eight assists and Luis Scola added 15 points and 11 rebounds as the Suns began their first season without former franchise star Steve Nash.

Phoenix bridged the third and fourth quarters with a 15-3 run and pushed its lead to 74-66 on Shannon Brown’s free throw with 8:41 left. Stephen Curry stopped the bleeding and finally buried a jumper 21 seconds later, sparking a 16-4 run that would put the Warriors back in control.

The Suns stuck around and grabbed the lead again on Scola’s turnaround with 1:43 on the clock but would not make another field goal. Landry’s two baskets in the final 1:22 clinched it for Golden State.

GAME NOTEBOOK: Curry, who signed a four-year, $44 million contract extension before the game, shot 2-of-14 from the floor with more turnovers (four) than assists (three). … Golden State C Andrew Bogut (ankle) made his debut for the Warriors after being the centerpiece of the trade that sent Monta Ellis to the Milwaukee Bucks last season. He scored eight points in 18 minutes. … Phoenix worked at a slower pace without Nash, totaling only 11 fast break points.
