Jarrett Jack hit three free throws with 8.4 seconds remaining to cap a furious rally and lift the New Orleans Hornets to a 93-92 victory over the visiting Dallas Mavericks on Wednesday.
Again filling in for Chris Paul, Jack finished with 21 points, seven assists and six rebounds. In the fourth quarter, he was 4 of 6 from the field and 5 of 5 from the line.
Marco Belinelli added 21 points off the bench for the Hornets, who were playing their second game without Paul after the All-Star point guard suffered a mild concussion over the weekend at Cleveland.
Dallas led by as much as 11 points in the fourth quarter and was still up, 92-85, after Dirk Nowitzki hit a technical free throw with 1:13 remaining. But Belinelli knocked down a 3-pointer and Emeka Okafor cut it to 92-90 with a short jumper.
After former Hornet Tyson Chandler missed a pair of free throws with 17 seconds on the clock, New Orleans put it in Jack’s hands, and he drew a foul from Jason Kidd on a 3-point attempt.
Jack hit all three free throws - the last after a timeout - to put New Orleans ahead, and Nowitzki missed a contested 17-foot jumper as time expired.
Nowitzki scored 26 points and Chandler collected 16 and 13 rebounds for Dallas, which lost for just the third time in 22 games. All three losses have been by one point.
