Carmelo Anthony led the way with 31 points and 11 rebounds as the visiting New York Knicks took over the No. 6 spot in the Eastern Conference with a 97-92 victory over the Philadelphia 76ers on Wednesday.
Amar’e Stoudemire added 18 points, six rebounds and seven assists for the Knicks (40-38), who have won five in a row to move one-half game ahead of the 76ers (40-39) and into sixth with four games left in the regular season.
Philadelphia, which has dropped three straight, has three games remaining.
New York tried to run away with it, leading by as much as 19 points in the third quarter. They were still ahead by 12 after Stoudemire hit a jumper with 9:18 left in the fourth.
That’s when the 76ers began to make their move, getting six straight points from Thaddeus Young before Jodie Meeks gave them their first lead of the second half, 88-87, with 2:46 remaining.
Toney Douglas stopped the bleeding at the 1:47 mark, burying a 3-pointer to give New York back the lead. Douglas would hit four free throws in the final minute and Anthony added a 3-pointer with 11.4 seconds left to seal it.
