Garrett Cooper's two-out, two-run double in the ninth inning capped a five-run rally and gave the visiting Miami Marlins a 5-4 win over the Atlanta Braves, ending their four-game losing streak and salvaging a game in the four-game series.
Five Atlanta pitchers had combined to shut out Miami through eight innings. But the Marlins rallied against Atlanta closer A.J. Minter to win their first game of the season when trailing after the eighth inning.
The Marlins got run-scoring singles from Yuli Gurriel, Avisail Garcia and Jazz Chisholm Jr. The Braves lifted Minter in favor of Jesse Chavez and Cooper doubled to center field on a 2-2 pitch to drive home the tying and go-ahead runs.
The winning pitcher was A.J. Puk (2-0), who worked a scoreless eighth. Dylan Floro finished it with a perfect ninth, striking out two, to earn his first save.
Minter (1-3) took the loss, allowing five runs on five hits in two thirds of an inning.
The game was stopped by heavy rain with the game scoreless through three innings. Neither starter returned after a delay of three hours and one minute. Miami's Braxton Garrett allowed one hit and struck out three. Atlanta's Kyle Wright gave up two hits, walked one and fanned six, matching his season high.
Atlanta got two innings of relief from Collin McHugh and one each from Dylan Lee, Kirby Yates and Nick Anderson.
The Braves sent eight batters to the plate in the fifth inning and scored four times. After reliever Matt Barnes walked Kevin Pillar with the bases loaded, the Braves scored on an RBI single by Chadwick Tromp and Ronald Acuna Jr.'s hard-hit fielder's choice that was misplayed at second base. The fourth run came home on Matt Olson's infield grounder.
The comeback prevented the Braves from their first four-game sweep over the Marlins in Atlanta since August 2018.
The two teams will begin a three-game series in Miami on Tuesday.
