Ducks 1, Blackhawks 0: Devante Smith-Pelly broke a scoreless tie with a short-handed goal in the third period and rookie John Gibson made 38 saves for his second career shutout for visiting Anaheim.
Gibson turned away 18 shots in the third period of his third start of the season as the Ducks won for the eighth time in nine games. Smith-Pelly rewarded his netminder's stellar play by scoring on a breakaway with 8:28 left in the session for the game's only goal.
Rookie Scott Darling - making his second straight start following a 32-save victory in his NHL debut on Sunday - made 24 saves for Chicago, which lost for the third time in four contests. The Blackhawks have scored only six goals during their 1-3-0 skid.
The Blackhawks dominated the final 20 minutes and had a chance to break the scoreless deadlock, going on their second power play midway through the period. However, defenseman Brent Seabrook lost an edge and fell at the blue line, leaving an opening for Smith-Pelly to break in alone on Darling and squeeze a backhander between his pads.
Defenseman Niklas Hjalmarsson hit the crossbar in the opening period and Chicago had another chance thwarted when Gibson denied Brandon Saad on a partial breakaway. Gibson's best save through the first two sessions came on Jeremy Morin's blast late in the second, moments before Darling stopped a pair of shots by Matt Beleskey.
GAME NOTEBOOK: Ducks LW Dany Heatley, who has been sidelined since suffering a groin injury in the preseason, registered one shot in 13:26 of ice time in his debut with Anaheim. ... Blackhawks G Corey Crawford (upper body) missed his fifth consecutive game but joined the team at Tuesday's morning skate and said he's "getting pretty close" to returning. ... Anaheim recalled Josh Manson from Norfolk of the American Hockey League to take the place of fellow D Ben Lovejoy, who is expected to miss six to eight weeks after breaking his finger during a fight against San Jose on Sunday.
