Miles McBride scored a team-high 17 points to go with seven rebounds and seven assists as No. 11 West Virginia recorded an 80-71 win over host Georgetown on Sunday in Washington.
Derek Culver shook off a slow start to finish with 14 points and nine rebounds for the Mountaineers (4-1).
West Virginia closed the Big 12/Big East Challenge game on an 18-9 run, thriving behind aggressiveness on both sides of the floor. The Mountaineers forced 15 turnovers compared to five for the Hoyas (1-2) and held a substantial edge in points off turnovers at 21-4.
Emmitt Matthews Jr. added 13 points and Taz Sherman chipped in 12 for West Virginia. Oscar Tshiebwe had nine points and six rebounds.
Georgetown's Jahvon Blair led all scorers with 19 points and made five of the Hoyas' 11 3-pointers. Jamorko Pickett had 11 points and eight rebounds and Chudier Bile scored 10 points.
Qudus Wahab narrowly missed a double-double, finishing with nine points and nine rebounds. Jalen Harris chipped in eight points and eight assists.
Tshiebwe scored five of West Virginia's 10 points during an early second-half run that put the Mountaineers on top 54-50 with 11:46 remaining.
Aiming to seize control, the Mountaineers surrendered seven straight points and went scoreless over the next 2:51. A Culver jumper in the paint and a layup from Tshiebwe gave the Mountaineers the lead at 58-57 with 8:17 to go, setting up a tight finish.
Georgetown took a 34-32 lead at halftime, benefiting from six 3-pointers and an ability to keep the Mountaineers of the offensive glass. West Virginia managed just three second-chance points in the first 20 minutes and was outrebounded 26-21 during that span while having two shots blocked.
Navigating first-half foul trouble, Culver scored three points in four minutes. Tshiebwe also sat for an extended stretch with two early fouls, going scoreless in nine minutes.
Before Sunday, the former Big East rivals last met in the first round of the 2014 NIT at McDonough Arena. The Hoyas lead the all-time series 27-26.
