Derek Culver recorded a double-double with 13 points and 12 rebounds and Taz Sherman finished with a game-high 18 points to help No. 17 West Virginia close out a tight 76-72 victory over Iowa State on Tuesday night in Ames, Iowa.

Down by two points, Iowa State had a chance to tie or take the lead with under 10 seconds left when guard Rasir Bolton began to drive to the hoop, but he lost the ball when he crashed into Mountaineers forward Gabe Osabuohien, sending both players down to the floor.

The collision surprisingly did not draw a whistle, and Sherman collected the loose ball for West Virginia. He then drew a foul and made a pair of free throws to seal the outcome.

The Mountaineers (12-5, 5-3 Big 12) bounced back after a disappointing 85-80 home loss to Florida in the SEC/Big 12 Challenge on Saturday and earned the season sweep of the Cyclones (2-10, 0-7).

Iowa State has not won since beating Jackson State on Dec. 20 and dropped its sixth consecutive game. The Cyclones lost 95-56 to Mississippi State on Saturday in the SEC/Big 12 Challenge.

West Virginia led by as many as 15 in the second half, but the Cyclones used a 15-4 surge to cut the deficit to 71-70 with 2:49 left.

The Mountaineers' defense buckled down in the final minute and stopped a key possession for the Cyclones, as Osabuohien, whom West Virginia coach Bob Huggins inserted late for his defensive prowess, blocked Jalen Coleman-Lands' shot near the rim. Solomon Young fired a desperation jumper at the shot-clock buzzer that missed.

Sean McNeil and Emmitt Matthews Jr. each finished with 13 points off West Virginia's bench. Miles McBride contributed nine points and eight rebounds for the Mountaineers, who outrebounded the Cyclones 45-32.

The trio helped the Mountaineers erase a 26-20 deficit with 8:59 left in the first half with a 16-0 run.

Bolton, Young and Tyler Harris each had 15 points for Iowa State while Coleman-Lands finished with 11 points.
