Sophomore guard Devon Dotson scored 19 points on 7-for-12 shooting Monday as No. 4 Kansas overwhelmed Chaminade 93-63 in the first round of the Maui Invitational at Lahaina, Hawaii.
The victory was the fourth straight for the Jayhawks (4-1), who advanced to Tuesday's semifinal round, where they will face BYU. Chaminade (2-1) will oppose UCLA in the consolation bracket.
After allowing Chaminade the first five points of the game and a 7-3 lead, Kansas went on a 17-0 run triggered by Dotson's seven points.
The Division II Silverswords used a 7-0 flurry to crawl back within 27-17, but the Jayhawks regained control. They closed the half with a 14-7 run and led 47-27 at the break. Sophomore guard Ochai Agbaji made back-to-back 3-pointers in a 36-second span during the final three minutes before halftime.
A 5-for-5 blitz by Kansas early in the second half sealed the rout.
Foul trouble prevented Udoka Azubuike, the Big 12 preseason player of the year, from attempting a shot in the first half, but the 7-foot senior center finished with 15 points and seven rebounds. Another center, reserve sophomore David McCormack, added 10 points in 17 minutes.
Agbaji, who entered the tourney shooting just 36.8 percent, made three 3-pointers and added 11 points for Kansas. Senior guard Isaiah Moss nailed three treys and netted 13 points. Junior guard Marcus Garrett added eight points, seven assists and four steals.
Chaminade committed 27 turnovers in its first game since Nov. 10, when it captured a two-game tournament with wins over two Division II teams in Alaska. The turnovers led to 36 points for Kansas.
Senior guards Andre Arrisol and Tyler Cartaino paced the Silverswords with 18 and 17 points, respectively. They combined to shoot 13 of 19 from the floor.
With Michigan State's upset loss to Virginia Tech in the first round Monday, Kansas moves on as the favorite at Maui, where it also prevailed in 2015.
Kansas has won its last five in-season tournaments, beginning with the 2014 Orlando Classic, then the 2015 Maui Invitational, 2016 CBE Classic, 2017 HoopHall Miami Invitational and 2018 NIT Season Tip Off.
