No. 14 Kentucky became the first school to reach 1,000 victories in Southeastern Conference play when it recorded a 76-67 win over visiting Alabama on Saturday afternoon.
Kentucky (12-3, 3-0) led by as many as 15 points early in the second half only to see its lead cut to three at 70-67 with 2:14 to play. However, the Wildcats scored the final six points to secure the win.
The big play was a 3-pointer by sophomore guard Immanuel Quickley with one minute left to put Kentucky on top 74-67. Quickley added two free throws with 36 seconds left.
Quickley came off the bench to lead Kentucky with 19 points on 6-of-10 shooting. He made 5-of-6 from 3-point range. Over the past four games, all wins for UK, Quickley is averaging more than 18 points per game.
Junior forward Nick Richards added 13 points and 11 rebounds, his seventh double-double of the season. Sophomore guard Ashton Hagans added 15 points and nine rebounds. Freshman guard Tyrese Maxey scored 13.
Kentucky entered Saturday's game as the SEC's best free-throw shooting team at 78.2 percent. Against Alabama, the Wildcats were 11 of 17 from the line. Hagans converted 6 of 9 attempts.
Alabama (8-7, 1-2) entered the game leading the SEC in scoring at 84.4 points per game but ranked last in scoring defense, allowing 78.9 points.
The Crimson Tide also entered the game as No. 1 in the SEC with 11.1 3-pointers per game. However, it was Kentucky that did damage from deep with nine 3-pointers. Alabama made just 4 of 21.
Junior forward Herbert Jones paced Alabama with 18 points. Junior guard John Petty scored 16 and sophomore guard Kira Lewis added 10.
Kentucky, a charter member of the SEC in 1932, has 1,000 conference victories and 281 losses, a winning percentage of 78.1.
