Jalen Smith finished with 19 points and 11 rebounds, and teammate Aaron Wiggins added 13 points and 13 rebounds as No. 7 Maryland bounced back from a slow start and defeated visiting Rhode Island 73-55 on Saturday night.
Smith is a sophomore forward, and classmate Wiggins, a guard, helped Maryland pull away in the second half. The Terrapins needed to rally for a 35-32 halftime lead after trailing by 12 in the first half but then outscored the Rams 38-23 in the final 20 minutes.
Senior guard Anthony Cowan Jr. scored 14 points for Maryland (2-0), while sophomore guard Eric Ayala added 13 off the bench.
Ayala gave the Terrapins a lift after Rhode Island (1-1) stunned Maryland with a quick start and led 24-12 with 8:18 left in the first half.
The guard helped the Terrapins' offense get going by scoring eight of his points during the first half as Maryland rallied late to take the lead. The Rams pushed the margin to 12 twice before the Terrapins started turning things around.
Maryland was having problems with the ball for long stretches. The Terrapins turned it over 13 times in the first 14 minutes, and but then everything settled down.
Coach Mark Turgeon starting shifting things around and eventually went to a 1-3-1 zone defense and a quicker lineup. Maryland then scored 23 of the final 31 points to lead 35-32 at the break.
The big push came on a 10-0 run that gave the Terrapins a 30-28 lead with just under 90 seconds left. That's when Donta Scott drilled a 3-pointer.
Wiggins then made a trey with 36 seconds left in the half. Darryl Morsell, who had made a dunk with just over a minute left, got the assist on Wiggins' 3-pointer.
The Terrapins then used a 9-2 run early in second half that put them in charge.
Jeff Dowtin scored 14 points to lead Rhode Island.
